Homeschool Mornings: Geography, Time Zones & Building a Sundial

This morning in our homeschool, we continued exploring our geography project, focusing on time zones and how time differs around the world. That naturally led us into a really fun discussion about sundials and how people used the sun to tell time long before clocks existed.

Tayo was especially inspired and decided to make his own sundial! It was super simple  all we needed was a cut-out circle (a paper plate works too), and something to stick in the centre like a pencil, straw, or stick. We marked the edges with numbers (you can use regular digits, Roman numerals, or your own style), and Tayo added his own colourful design.

We set it outside at the correct starting time and didn’t have to move it again  the sun did all the work. As it moved across the sky, it cast a shadow on the dial, showing us the time throughout the day. It was such a cool, hands-on way to learn about the Earth’s movement, shadows, and how timekeeping has evolved.

A lovely little project that turned into a great learning experience  just sunshine, curiosity, and creativity!
